The Auto Mag Owner's Reference Manual

A Resource for Auto Mag Owners and Enthusiasts

In the 1990’s, Brian Maynard’s name became synonymous with the name Auto Mag. Although there were a few legendary Auto Mag specialists that came before him, with the Auto Mag pistol out of production, the interest had waned and the specialists all but dropped out of the picture. Names like Lee Jurras, Kent Lamont and Ed O’Neil will forever be known as experts in the Auto Mag world when it comes to specialized gunsmithing and custom configurations of the gun. But the need for such specialty services were simply no longer there, leaving these men to expand their talents into other areas.

With the Auto Mag seemingly all but forgotten, in 1984, Clint Eastwood decides to debut one in his next Dirty Harry movie “Sudden Impact”. The movie sparked a renewed interest in the gun and current owners were going to their gun safe, dusting off their Auto Mag and heading to the range. Other’s who had never heard of the gun were searching for one of these now obsolete relics, wanting to own one for the very first time. The only problem was that, with the gun out of production and all the experts retired, information was scarce on where to buy one, how to obtain parts and ammo and who to contact for service and repair.

Since Brian had become the source for service and repair, tune-ups, etc, he had also become the contact person for just about everything else when it came to information about the gun. He was spending a lot of time on the phone, answering questions on a daily basis and it dawned on him. Why not write a reference manual with all the info he had and make it available to everyone. So he sat down and wrote the book, offering information on everything from tuning tips, shooting data, parts and service. He also included information about AMT’s Auto Mag series guns and Maynard Arms, past and present. He estimates his sales topped over 1000 copies, including some full color and heavy weight, signed by the author.

When Brian became to busy making custom barrels and tools for the gun, he commissioned Bruce Stark and Yoshi Ishigura to take over sales. An estimated 2000 copies of the manual were sold, in various configurations spanning three editions over a decade and a half. The Phoenix edition is in the works and will cover the new Auto Mag LTD, it’s history and current status. ETA of it’s release is in the spring of 2026.
